SHORT COURSES

Introduction to Ancient Cosmology

Cosmology is the study of how the cosmos (or universe) is formed. Humans have always looked around them and asked why things are the way they are, wondered where they came from. This introduction to Ancient Cosmology will look at some of the ideas in the ancient world around how the universe was formed, what the world is made of, and where we humans came from. We will look at various mythological explanations for the world’s existence, as well as some proto-scientific attempts to explain the universe. We will deal with sources from the Roman and Greek worlds, as well as Babylonian texts, the Bible, and others. All sources will be read in English translation.

This six-week course will take place on Wednesdays at 19:00-20:00 (UK time) 15th September, 22nd September, 29th September, 6th October, 13th October and 20th October.

Fee: £42. Tutor: Stephen McCarthy.

Priam Through a Prism: Remake, Remodel

The figure of Priam, last king of Troy, is a familiar one to students of Greek myth and fans of epic ‘sword and sandal’ films; but he also provides a template for ‘loser kings’ throughout ancient literature and history. So, to see how his character is remade and remodelled to reflect changing literary and political landscapes, we’ll be looking at the Iliad and Aeneid 2, along with Book 8 of Lucan’s Civil War and Histories 1 by Tacitus, with a final glimpse at modern ‘Priams’ in our own times.

This six week course will take place on Thursdays at 19:00-20:00 (UK time) 16th September, 23rd September, 30th September, 7th October, 14th October and 21st October.

Fee: £42. Tutor: Lynn Gordon.

A Pragmatist for the People: Cicero, the Conservative Revolutionary

It’s an odd but intriguing fact that Cicero, one of the more conservative of Roman politicians, has provided inspiration for some of the most significant revolutions of modern history. How come? To answer this question, we’ll look at Cicero the Republican politician, the American Revolution of 1776, the French Revolution of 1789, the year of European revolutions in 1848 and consider why he us no longer the radical political influence he once was.

This six week course will take place on Thursdays at 19:00-20:00 (UK time) 4th November, 11th November, 18th November, 25th November, 2nd December and 9th December.

Fee: £42. Tutor: Lynn Gordon.
