Description

This 8-week course will examine the political, social, economic and religious trends of the period from AD 193 to 493 across the Mediterranean.

Particular emphasis will be given to the transformations that took Rome from embodying a Classical Pagan Greco-Roman Empire to a Christian autocracy and the final dissolution and transformation of the Western Empire.

Students’ readings will draw from Cassius Dio, Bishop Eusebius and Ammianus Marcellinus.

Classes will be conducted via Zoom on Wednesdays, 19:30-21:00 (UK local time) on Wednesday 2nd October, 9th October, 16th October, 23rd October (no class on 30th October), 6th November, 13th November, 20th November, and 27th November 2024.

Tutor: Dr Stephen Chappell.

The class will proceed subject to a minimum number of enrolments.

Cancellation policy: students will receive a full refund if the student cancels their registration more than two weeks before the class begins. Students will receive 50% refund if the student cancels their registration 8-14 days before the class begins.
