Old English for Beginners is aimed at everyone who would like to learn Old English and no prior knowledge is required. This online course will cover pronunciation and grammar, and will include reading and translation. A few Old English texts will be introduced and students will be able to read and translate these with the help of glossaries. Students will thus have the chance to familiarise themselves with Old English texts in their manuscript context.
This class will meet on Wednesdays from 19:00-20:00 (UK/Ireland local time) from 21st September 2022 using Matt Love, Learn Old English with Leofwin – beginners (Hereward: Anglo-Saxon Books, 2014). Lessons are conducted via Zoom and will require approximately 1-2 hours of independent study.
In this 10 week term, you will learn the basic grammar and language skills to describe yourself, your family, and everyday-life situations. You will be able to read, understand and translate simple texts and you will also be able to read literary texts with the help of glossaries and modern translations.
Dates for the autumn term are 21st September, 28th September, 5th October, 12th October, 19th October, 26th October, (no class on 2nd November), 9th November, 16th November, 23rd November and 30th November 2022.
