This five-week course will give students an introduction to five areas of Roman material culture: architecture, art, social artifacts, materiality and social spaces (e.g., housing), and a special subject for the final session on ancestral legacy imagery.
Each session will consist of a 30-minute lecture followed by a 30-minute seminar, involving group discussion/Q & A and the use of primary and secondary sources. The course covers a broad historical timeline, introducing students to Roman material culture developments over different timeframes and geographies, while also highlighting other cultures’ influences upon Roman material culture.
Classes will be conducted via Zoom on Mondays, 19:00-20:00 (UTC, UK time) on 21st February, 28th February, 7th March, 14th March, and 21st March 2022.
