Description
How do translators negotiate the transition from ancient Greek culture, grammar, and meaning to modern English? This 5-week course will explore this question through the theoretical and practical.
Each week, we will look at popular passages from ancient Greek texts, considering the context of the ancient sources, the challenges their grammar and ideas present to translators, and what they both leave behind and retain.
No knowledge of ancient Greek is assumed. Selected passages we will work with include excerpts from Aristophanes, Homer, the Homeric Hymn to Hermes, Sophocles, and Plato.
This course is conducted via Zoom. Classes will meet for 90 minutes each week on on Mondays at 19:30 (GMT) on Monday 24th February, 3rd March, 10th March, 17th March and 24th March 2025.
