Description

From the Percy Jackson novels to Harry Potter and beyond, the stories of ancient Greece and Rome continue to inspire modern writers for young audiences.

Participants will explore how classical myth, history, and culture are reimagined in children’s and young adult literature from the nineteenth century to the present. The course will examine how authors translate the ancient world for young readers – reshaping its events, worlds, gods and heroes – and how these retellings engage with questions of education, identity and gender.

We will explore a range of texts alongside theoretical and critical perspectives on adaptation, reception, and children’s literature. All texts will be provided.

The class will meet on Zoom, on Tuesdays at 18:00-19:30 (GMT) on Tuesday 20th January, 27th January, 3rd February, mid-term break 10th February, 17th February, 24th February, 3rd March, 10th March, and 17th March 2026.

Tutor: Prof Susan Deacy.

The class will proceed subject to a minimum number of enrolments.

Cancellation policy: students will receive a full refund if the student cancels their registration more than two weeks before the class begins. Students will receive 50% refund if the student cancels their registration 8-14 days before the class begins.
