What are the benefits of learning Latin and Classical Greek?

Winston Churchill, in his autobiography, stated that children should “learn Latin as an honour, and Greek as a treat”. Classical Greek is a treat: it is a puzzle to be solved. Modern Greek has evolved as an independent branch of the Indo-European family of languages, and while not an ancestor of English like Latin, many English words derive from ancient Greek. This inflected language forces native English speakers to examine their own use of language and learning Greek will improve English grammar and spelling as well as helping students learn other European languages. Finally, an ability to read ancient Greek opens up a world of wonderful literature. From the Homeric epics, to the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, to the dialogues of Plato, and even the New Testament, the satisfaction of reading texts such as these in the original Greek cannot be underestimated.

One-to-one lessons

Do you offer online or in-person sessions?

All classes are online using Zoom. You don’t need any special equipment, just a smartphone or webcam and a stable internet connection. Your tutor will arrange the meeting on Zoom and send you the link. Just click the link at the time of the class!

What does a typical lesson look like?

I have strategies to help you learn the alphabet, and once you have mastered that, we can begin learning your first words of ancient Greek! I will explain the grammar to you, then use multiple examples so you can see how the particular construction works in practice. We will translate examples from Greek to English, and from English into Greek until you are comfortable. Only then will we move on.

What age range do you tutor?

I tutor high school students from age 12 upwards. They may wish to try out classical Greek, or they may have a qualification in mind (GCSE or A level). I can provide tuition for university students and I teach leisure* classes for adults – these can be groups or individuals.

* A leisure class is one which is not assessed and does not lead to a qualification.

How much do you charge and how is payment made?

Payment is made in advance by Paypal or bank transfer. See the Courses tab for fees and availability.

What if I have to cancel a 1:1 lesson?

If you are not able to make a session, please request a change in time at least 24 hours in advance. All you need to do is contact me and we can set up a different time. If no contact is made, then it is charged as if we had the session.
