Description

Ask anyone where were the most important centres of ancient civilisation and they will probably start with Athens and Rome.  But the feudal nature of the ancient world meant that “civilisation” could be rapidly imported and exported, created and destroyed.  No vast empire can ensure that all of its furthest outposts are created in its own image.

How did Jerusalem come to be a holy place for three different religions?  What was Lyon like when the Romans made it a colony in 43 BC?  What about the importance of Ravenna as a centre of the Byzantine empire?

This course will focus on some of the lesser-known centres of the ancient world.  Hopping around different parts of the globe each week, we will explore the populations, topographies and histories of a wide variety of ancient civilisations to build a more comprehensive picture of the classical past.
