Do you want something interesting to listen to on your daily commute? Or fancy taking a break from global warming and Brexit? Have a look at the list of podcasts below.
Andy Keen, Head of Classics at Bristol Grammar School, made a list of episodes of the BBC weekly Radio 4 show, In Our Time, which might be of interest to classicists and ancient historians. Hosted by British broadcaster and author, Melvyn Bragg, and first broadcast in October 1988, In Our Time is about to celebrate its 21st birthday. The live discussion series focuses on the history of ideas and each programme covers a specific historical, philosophical, religious, cultural or scientific topic discussed by the presenter and three academic guests. Except for a summer break between July and September, the show is broadcast live and unedited at 9am on Thursdays. Classicists and ancient historians such as Prof Edith Hall, Dr Nick Lowe, Prof Simon Goldhill and Prof Paul Cartledge continue to be frequent guests.
Andy Keen’s list can be found here https://keenerclassics.wordpress.com/2017/08/06/in-our-time-classics-podcasts/comment-page-1/#comment-829. In addition to the long-running Radio 4 show, Andy has added a number of other programmes and broadcasts, to create a comprehensive list of podcasts.
While I’m here, I’d also like to recommend some other podcasts which you may not have come across yet. The first is The History of Ancient Greece Podcast ( http://www.thehistoryofancientgreece.com/ ) by Ryan Stitt and currently on its 96th episode. Another is Doug Metzger’s literatureandhistory.com which has just published episode 70 on Statius’ Thebaid. You can choose to listen to the podcast or read a transcription.
