This 8-week course will examine mythological and historical figures from the classical world, including Elagabalus, Hera and Akhenaten. Evaluating the ancient and secondary evidence, we’ll vote on what we think of them!

Description

“Mad, bad, and dangerous to know.” Whilst this was the assessment of Lady Caroline Lamb about Lord Byron, it also suits a number of both mythological and historical figures from the classical world!

This 8-week course will examine a figure each week, including Roman emperor Elagabalus, Greek goddess Hera, and Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten – each week we’ll discuss the figure, using both ancient evidence and secondary source evaluation, and vote on what we think of them!

Participants will meet on Zoom, from 18:00-19:30 (GMT) on Wednesday 28th January, 4th February, 11th February, 18th February, mid-term break 25th February, 4th March, 11th March, 18th March, and 25th March 2026.

The class will proceed subject to a minimum number of enrolments.

Cancellation policy: students will receive a full refund if the student cancels their registration more than two weeks before the class begins. Students will receive 50% refund if the student cancels their registration 8-14 days before the class begins.
