Description

Rome has long been a popular theme for film and TV, and has even featured prominently in on screen advertising. Most often Rome is used as a backdrop to historical narratives either real or fictional, in contrast to the fantastical or mythological narratives more common to depictions of ancient Greece on screen.

In this 4-week course, we will explore some of the ways that Rome and Romans have been depicted on screen, how these portrayals measure up to the realities of antiquity and what they say about us today. We’ll be considering topics including how film, TV and other screen media represent spectacle, the Roman empire, and relationships between Romans and other cultures.

It will not be necessary to have seen any of the texts that we’ll be exploring, but it may be preferable if you want to avoid spoilers!

This course is conducted via Zoom. Classes will meet for 90 minutes each week on on Thursdays at 19:30-21:00 (GMT+1) on Thursday 8th May, 15th May, 22nd May, 29th May 2025.
