Description

The Early Byzantine Empire was both a continuation of Classical Greco-Roman culture and a transition from the Classical Pagan world into Medieval Christendom.

This 8 week course will cover the period from the emperors Constantine I (306-37) to Heraclius (610-41) with an emphasis on politics, society, economics and religion/culture.  Sources will include Ammianus Marcellinus and Procopius.

Classes will be conducted via Zoom on Wednesdays, 19:30-21:00 (GMT) on Wednesday 15th January, 22nd January, 29th January, 5th February, (mid-term break on 12th February), 19th February, 26th February, 5th March, and 12th March 2025.

Tutor: Dr Stephen Chappell.

The class will proceed subject to a minimum number of enrolments.

Cancellation policy: students will receive a full refund if the student cancels their registration more than two weeks before the class begins. Students will receive 50% refund if the student cancels their registration 8-14 days before the class begins.
