Queen’s University Belfast, Monday 20th July – Friday 31st July 2020

The fifth Belfast Summer School will take place in July 2020 at Queen’s University Belfast.  Courses are available in Latin and Classical Greek at beginners, intermediate and advanced levels.  Students may enrol for one week (Monday 20th July – Friday 24th July) or two (Monday 20th – Friday 31st July).  Time is allocated between sessions for independent study and other activities will include guest lectures.  

COURSES OFFERED IN 2020

LATIN

Latin for beginners: no previous knowledge required.

Intermediate Latin: Students with a basic knowledge of Latin are asked to include on their application form details of courses already completed and textbooks used.  The course will be tailored to meet the needs of students, and tutors will use a variety of resources including Wheelock’s Latin.  Students are asked to bring a small Latin-English/English-Latin dictionary (for example, the Collins Gem Latin Dictionary).

Advanced Latin: Advanced classes will read an unadapted text with grammar explanations provided as necessary. 

CLASSICAL GREEK

Classical Greek for beginners: no previous knowledge necessary however students are required to learn the Greek alphabet before commencing the course.  Instructions and a worksheet will be provided. 

Intermediate Classical Greek: This course is suitable for students who wish to consolidate their study of basic grammar.  Applicants are asked to include on their application form details of courses already completed and textbooks used.  The course will be tailored to the needs of students and resources used will include Athenaze and Reading Greek

Advanced Classical Greek: Advanced classes will read an unadapted text with grammar explanations provided as necessary. 

Students will be provided with worksheets and handouts.  It is not necessary to purchase a textbook but you may wish to buy a Latin dictionary or Greek lexicon if you do not already own one.

Please note that due to the intensive nature of the courses, it is not possible to take two courses simultaneously.

TRANSLATION WORKSHOPS

The Summer School will conclude with Translation Workshops on Friday 31st July.  The workshops will be pitched at appropriate levels for both beginners and intermediate/advanced students in Latin and Greek, and the texts used will complement the work completed in summer school classes.  Students who have completed the beginners course will translate adapted texts, while intermediate and advanced students will translate texts which have been only slightly adapted. 

SUMMER SCHOOL OUTING

There will be an afternoon outing on Wednesday 22nd July leaving at 1.30pm and returning at approximately 5pm. Details to be confirmed nearer the time.

SUMMER SCHOOL SOCIAL

The Summer School dinner will take place on Thursday 23rd July at 5pm.  Venue to be confirmed. Menu choices and a deposit will be collected on the first day of the summer school. 

The outing and the dinner are optional. 

Presentation of certificates

The first week of the Summer School will conclude on Friday 24th July at 1pm with the presentation of certificates of attendance to those students who are completing one week only.  All students are invited to attend.  Refreshments will be provided. Students attending the entire summer school will be presented with their certificates on Friday 31st July at 12 noon.  Refreshments will be provided.

LOCATION: Lessons will take place on the first floor of the Peter Froggatt Centre, centrally located on the Queen’s campus.  All rooms are fully accessible. 

REFRESHMENTS AND CATERING: The Junction Cafe is located on the ground floor of the Peter Froggatt Centre/Main Site Tower and the Hope Cafe is adjacent to the McClay Library nearby.

Please note food and accommodation are not included in the summer school fee.  Contact the co-ordinator if you require assistance with booking accommodation.

REGISTRATION

To register for the 2020 summer school, please complete the registration form (available by emailing the Summer School Co-ordinator on belfastsummerschool@gmail.com) and return with payment to the Summer School Co-ordinator by email belfastsummerschool@gmail.com or post to Belfast Summer School, c/o 39 Old Mill Grove, Belfast BT16 1WB.  Registration forms should be accompanied by either the course fee in full (£150 if registering for the two week course, £80 if registering for the one day course) or a £50 non-refundable deposit.  If paying a deposit, the remainder of the course fee must be paid by Friday 26th June 2020.

Emailed forms should be followed within 24 hours by online payment. 

Please note, places on the Summer School cannot be secured until payment is received. 

The summer school is non-residential and is open to all aged 14 and over.  Students between the ages of 14 and 17 MUST be accompanied by a chaperone.  The chaperone is not required to pay the fee unless participating in the summer school themselves.
