This course will address political, social, economic and religious themes during the Early and Middle Roman Republic (ca 500 – 133 BC), a period which saw Rome rise from being a regional market town in Latium to the mistress of the Mediterranean.
Course duration: 8 weeks, on Thursdays at 18:00-19:30 (UK/Ireland local time) from 2nd October 2025.

Description

The Early and Middle Roman Republic (ca 500 – 133 BC) saw Rome rise from being a regional market town in Latium to the mistress of the Mediterranean.
The course will address political, social, economic and religious themes with emphasis on imperialism throughout the period, the Struggle of the Orders in the Early Republic and the new political order of the Middle Republic, characterised by constrained competition among elites.
Discussions will centre extensively on Livy, but also Polybius.
We will meet on Zoom on Thursdays, 18:00-19:30 (UK/Ireland local time) on 2nd October, 9th October, 16th October, 23rd October, (mid-term break 30th October), 6th November, 13th November, 20th November, and 27th November 2025.

The class will proceed subject to a minimum number of enrolments.

Cancellation policy: students will receive a full refund if the student cancels their registration more than two weeks before the class begins. Students will receive 50% refund if the student cancels their registration 8-14 days before the class begins.
