Description

There’s no-one quite like Homer. And this online class is for anyone who loves the Odyssey and the Iliad. We are a group of Homer fans who enjoy exploring the language but also discussing the wider cultural context of the poems.

Of course, there’s nothing quite like reading the Homeric epics in the original Greek. You are welcome to join us whether you have never translated Homer before and would like to see how it’s done, or you already have some experience with translation of unadapted Greek.

We will continue reading Odyssey book 8 in the original Greek. The suggested text and commentary is by Geoffrey Steadman (free pdf download with additional resources) or if you wish to buy the physical book, the ISBN is 978-0984306527.

The group will meet on Tuesdays from 16:00-17:00 (UK/Ireland local time) for 9 weeks on 13th January, 20th January, 27th January, 3rd February, mid-term break 10th February, 17th February, 24th February, 3rd March, 10th March, and 17th March 2026.

Tutor: Helen McVeigh

The class will proceed subject to a minimum number of enrolments.

Cancellation policy: students will receive a full refund if the student cancels their registration more than two weeks before the class begins. Students will receive 50% refund if the student cancels their registration 8-14 days before the class begins.
