Description
This 6 week course will look at the fascinating mythological figure of Medea.
After a short introduction to her mythological narrative in the ancient sources and in ancient reception, we’ll consider how she has been depicted in different times and across different media – she has inspired opera by Cherubini, film by Lars von Trier, a recent spate of novels by Rosie Hewlett, Eilish Quin, Rani Selverajah, and even a graphic novel.
We will look at how Medea and her story is depicted in literature, theatre, music and tv/film, and consider which aspects of her portrayal remain and which are altered in response to different cultures and audiences.
No text purchases are required as extracts will be provided (within educational copyright regulations). The sessions will comprise a presentation followed by discussion. Extracts and slides will be sent in advance of each session.
Medea is a complex and multi-layered figure who continues to inspire writers and artists. Join us in digging deeper into what aspects of her character persist in classical reception!
