Description

The Greco-Persian Wars had a profound effect on the ancient Greek world, but most especially on the Athenian polis. Athens would play a dominant role in these Wars and, as a result, in their aftermath, when a league against Persia was formed; it was a league which Athens came to dominate and ultimately use to her own ends.

In this 4-week course, we will examine the three major battles that constitute the Greco-Persian Wars: Marathon, Thermopylae, and Salamis, and some of the prominent individuals who were responsible for guiding Athens through the conflict. In particular, we will recreate events from the details presented by vital primary sources such as Herodotus and Aeschylus.

The purpose of this module is to analyse the battles of 490 and 480 BC for ourselves and to reflect on the eventual Persian defeat which has so often been seen as a key turning point, not only in the history of classical Greece, but in world history.

Participants will meet on Zoom, on Wednesday 7th May, 14th May, 21st May and 28th May 2025 at 19:00-20:30 (GMT+1).

No knowledge of ancient Greek is required.
