This 6-week course will explore the intriguing heroines of ancient Greece through myths that narrated stories about them and the cults dedicated to their worship.

We will begin with an introduction to the figure of the heroine in archaic and classical Greece, considering how heroines differ from heroes, their intersections and divergences from goddesses, and the various patterns that emerge in their myths. Each week, we will examine these questions and themes through the lens of specific heroines, including Helen, Ino, Iphigenia, and Penelope.

All readings will be provided.

This course is conducted via Zoom. Classes will meet for 90 minutes each week on Mondays at 19:30 (GMT) on Monday 6th January, 13th January, 20th January, 27th January, 3rd February, and 10th February 2025.

Tutor: Dr Eirene Allen.

The class will proceed subject to a minimum number of enrolments.

Cancellation policy: students will receive a full refund if the student cancels their registration more than two weeks before the class begins. Students will receive 50% refund if the student cancels their registration 8-14 days before the class begins.
